Dan's Story

People always ask me how I started this business and, to be completely honest, I find myself explaining how I never actually planned to open my own company... it just happened!  Working with animals has always been like a second nature to me, having grown up surrounded by pets my entire life. There was always a dog in my house, but there were plenty of other critters running around too! Just about anything my parents allowed through the front door eventually became a pet: frogs, lizards, fish, scorpions, chinchillas... you name it!  I was born with a love for all animals and that passion grows stronger every day.

In 2008, I took a semester off from college to figure out just what I wanted to do with my life.  My search quickly ended when I started working as a vet assistant at the Manhasset Animal Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Robert Henrickson, to whom I will always be grateful for giving me my start.  Through my work at the animal hospital I was able to learn about all aspects of caring for animals, not just about pet ownership but also the symptoms of countless diseases, emergency care and countless other valuable skills.  As time went on I decided to continue my education, enrolling as a part time student at Nassau Community College.

While at NCC I really began to hone my skills as a business owner. I came to the realization that what I originally thought was simply a part-time dog walking job was actually a service that had a real need in my community.  Motivation in hand, I wrote my first business plan and kicked off the development of my company.  As time passed by I saw the business grow with it and realized it was time to hire my first employee.  This was one of the first real challenges I had to face; I had to trust someone other than myself to care for these animals that I had formed such a bond with.  Luckily, I quickly learned that finding someone who shares my passion for working with animals would produce a wonderful result!

As the needs of Dan's Dog Walking and Pet Sitting continued to grow I unfortunately had to step down from my position at the Manhasset Animal Hospital, taking both a broadened knowledge of animal care and incredible relationships with the hospital staff that are still strong today. Now focused on the business, we broadened the menu of services offered and expanded our travel area to reach more clients. I found that the greatest thing about this kind of business is having the opportunity to build an amazing team of employees, helping to grow and improve the company. With business on a straight track I decided to further my education at Hofstra University, graduating with a degree in Entrepreneurship in 2013.  Building a company that stems from one of my passions had allowed me to pursue others; I was able to start a non-profit organization, Hope For Hope, as well as a tech start-up, SmartLine and CharityWait. Today I am incredibly grateful and amazed when I look back at the journey this business has taken me on. I've been fortunate enough to surround myself with an amazing staff and have been able to create wonderful relationships with my clients.  My mission with this business has always been to provide pet owners with someone who is reliable, trustworthy and caring to look after their pets and I am incredibly honored to have been given the chance to do so for so many people within my community.  I look forward to many more years of providing the best quality pet care for your four-legged family members.

Sincerely,

Your Faithful Dog Walker
