How Do I Create A Safe Dog-Friendly Backyard?

If you’ve got a backyard, your dog is in luck. They don’t even need to leave home to enjoy running and playing in the sunshine! While backyards can be wonderful spaces for your dog to enjoy, they can also pose safety risks if they aren’t properly designed with your dog in mind.

At Dan’s Pet Care, we put your pet’s safety first at all times. The good news is that you can create a pet-friendly backyard that’s a perfect haven for you as well as for your dog! Keep reading to learn more about how to transform your outdoor space into a dog-friendly paradise.

Create the perfect boundary

A fenced-in backyard provides you with a lot of flexibility and peace of mind. Now your dog can run and play without getting lost or wandering into traffic. But be sure to choose the right boundary for your pet’s needs. A fence that isn’t really sturdy and dog-proof might be worse than no fence at all. It might offer the illusion of safety, but if your dog can squeeze through or under your fence (or jump over it), then you can’t really trust it.

If you have kids, it will be important to choose a fence that’s safe for them as well as for your dog. Some fences that are high enough for large dog breeds can present climbing risks for curious children. Educate your kids about fence safety, and avoid leaving your kids in the backyard unsupervised.

If you have a swimming pool, it’s extra-important to choose an appropriate boundary that will keep dogs and kids from getting in. Make sure to inspect fences regularly for any loose nails or sharp edges.

Avoid toxic or dangerous plants

Before adding a new bush, shrub or flower to your backyard, do some careful research to determine whether it’s safe for dogs. Azaleas, lilies, and sago palms are just a few of the plants that can be harmful if ingested. Instead, choose pet-friendly flowers like marigolds and sunflowers. Keep in mind that even if a plant isn’t poisonous for your dog, it could have thorns or other sharp points that end up hurting them accidentally.

It’s also important to keep a sharp eye out for wild plants that could harm your dog. If you have any corners of your backyard that have become overgrown with greenery, be sure to clear them and identify any unknown plant varieties.

Garden with your dog in mind

If you have a garden, be sure to keep it free from pesticides and other chemicals that could put your dog at risk. Organic gardening can have its challenges, but it’s worthwhile to protect your dog from hazardous substances.

If your dog likes to dig, they could pose a constant threat to your garden bed. End the conflict by choosing raised beds instead of planting directly in the ground. There are plenty of other benefits to raised beds — for one thing, you’ll find it much easier to weed your garden!

Provide plenty of pet-friendly entertainment

If your dog has nothing to do in the backyard, they might end up getting a little bored. Barking is a common symptom when dogs are stuck in an empty backyard for too long. Instead, keep things interesting with safe toys like chews and balls. Make sure your toys are durable enough to be left outdoors in the rain and sun. Also ensure they’re free of any small parts that could become dislodged and pose a choking hazard.

Keep trash and compost secure

Compost bins are an often-overlooked hazard found in many backyards. There are many human foods your dog shouldn’t consume, but they’re very tempting when placed in an outdoor composter. Choose a compost bin that closes securely and can’t be tipped over and spilled. Also make sure that outdoor trash cans are firmly sealed and inaccessible to your dog.

Choose safe outdoor furniture

Some outdoor furniture can be dangerous if your dog jumps on it or knocks it over. Be sure to choose chairs and tables that can stand up to any shenanigans your dog might have in mind. Also make sure that your outdoor furniture isn’t easily chewed into bits. This not only looks bad, but it can also present a choking hazard for your dog as small pieces become dislodged.
