How To Make Turkey & Cranberry Dog Treats Recipe
Who doesn’t love a good turkey dinner with all the fixings—stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce? Dogs love the sights and smells of a big feast, just like us. However, there are many items on a human dinner table that could make your dog sick. Even ingredients that aren’t necessarily toxic to dogs can be harmful in human-sized amounts. If you’ve ever wished you could share the taste of a traditional feast with your dog, now you can! Here at Dan’s Pet Care, we take dog treats very seriously—we even like to taste test them ourselves. With our simple recipe, you can include your dog in the flavors and smells of a festive holiday celebration. This article will show you how to make turkey and cranberry treats your dog will love!
Homemade treats are a wonderful way to show your dog a little extra love. You get to skip all the additives and preservatives in store-bought dog treats, and you know exactly what you’re feeding your dog. You can also adjust the recipe if your dog has any food sensitivities. Our recipe works fine with chicken instead of turkey, for example! Always check with your vet before making any adjustments to your dog’s diet.
Of course, turkey is the key ingredient. Turkey is in many commercial dog foods, but not all turkey is safe for dogs. It’s very important to protect your dog from the wrong kinds of turkey meat. Any type of seasoning is off the table. Garlic and onions, for example, are harmful to dogs. Avoid the turkey skin and bones and stick to only white meat. Also avoid any kind of processed turkey meat, and any meat with salt added.
Turkey and cranberries go together like peanut butter and jelly! Cranberries are safe for dogs in small quantities, but make sure no additional ingredients are added. Whether you’re using fresh or dried fruit, cranberries should be the only item on the ingredient list. Anything containing other fruits, juices, added sugar, or alcohol can threaten your pet’s health. This recipe uses a very small amount of cranberry to minimize the chance of stomach upset. Your dog will still get the antioxidant benefits cranberries have to offer! Of course, you can skip the fruit topping if your dog is a picky eater.
You will need:
· 1/4 c fresh cranberries (or dried cranberries with no other ingredients added)
· 1 ¾ c whole-wheat flour
· 2 ½ c quick oats
· 1 tsp baking powder
· 1 c water
· 1 ½ c unseasoned, boneless, white meat turkey (liquefied with the water in a food processor)
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a cookie sheet with olive oil. Combine the flour, oats and baking powder in a large bowl. Add the wet ingredients and mix together. Then, knead the dough flat on a floured surface. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place them on the cookie sheet. Try using leaf or bone-shaped cutters! Before baking, sprinkle finely chopped cranberry pieces on top of each treat. Bake for 25 minutes and be sure to refrigerate any leftovers.
These easy-to-make treats will make your dog feel like celebrating, any time of year! Remember to feed treats sparingly as part of a well-balanced diet.
